Pan Am journey ends in the Round of 16 for Gavin Robinson

Playing in the Round of 16 of the Inaugural Junior Pan American Games in Cali Colombia on Saturday 27th November 2021, and with a quarter final berth at stake, Robinson found himself down early in the first game but went on a 5-0 run to move into the lead at 5-3. The two players traded points before the Ecuadorian took back the advantage in the match with a 4-0 run of his own to lead 10-8. Robinson was never allowed to regain the lead in the match and after closing to within one point (11-10), was on the receiving end of Marcillo’s 7-1 run. Robinson eventually went down in the first game 14-21.

It was in the second set when Robinson was down 4-8 that he raised his had to call from some attention. His lower back had seemingly locked off during the game. In the fast-paced racquet sport which requires agility and some quick racquet speed, Robinson was never the same after returning to court. He committed several unforced errors. Despite some fight back during moments of the game he was too far behind to rally back into contention and went down 10-21 in the match which lasted 24 minutes.

Friday, November 26th

Gavin Robinson turned in an impressive performance to advance to the next round of the male Badminton competition at the Inaugural Junior Pan American Games in Cali Colombia on Friday 26th November 2021. In a see-saw battle with Cuba’s Daimel Roll, Robinson came away with the 2-1 (23-21, 9-21, 21-19) victory in the 44-minute match. The tide was set from the first set when Robinson trailed by as much as 8 points with the score on 15-7. But then the Bajan athlete went on a 8-2 run which leveled the scores at 20-20. Robinson took the lead with the very next point and never surrendered the lead going on to win the set 23-21 and complete an fantastic come from behind victory. His total run to victory saw him winning 11 points while keeping Roll to a mere three points.

The second game looked as though Robinson may have given his all in the first set as Roll romped to an easy 21-9 victory and with the momentum clearly in his corner. But Robinson regained his composure in the third and deciding set and the lead changed hands a few times but it was mainly with Robinson for most of the set. It was a nail bitter late in the set as the scores were levelled on 18-18 but Robinson pulled ahead once again and sealed the match with a 21-19 victory in the third set.
